Love Hawaii + Coffee = Beach Bum Cafe
If you’re a dyed-in-the-wool coffee person like we are at Beat of Hawaii, please take notice. There’s a coffee shop in Honolulu that’s turning the Hawaii coffee world on its ear. We stopped by Beach Bum Cafe while working in Honolulu recently and were impressed with the customer service, commitment to quality and one of the best cups of java we have tasted. Coffee talk is highly regarded here. Before selecting our roast we were given the opportunity to discuss and smell each offering. This is for the true coffee connoisseur looking for a friendly environment. The cost of about $5 a cup was worth every cent and the experience qualified as a revertible Hawaii activity. Read more ...

Take a deep breath, America - do you smell that? Unlike some regional favorites, the country's caffeine fixation is spread far and wide. What makes the world go around? If you answered “coffee,” then this story is for you. It’s all about our caffeinated beverage of choice as it’s grown and enjoyed in the Islands. Hawai‘i is actually the only place in the U.S. where coffee is grown, giving us a great chance to trace its journey from farm to café, seed to cup. Watch the video ...

Interview with coffee pro Dennis McQuoid (Beach Bum Cafe)
Dennis McQuoid, the namesake beach bum, opened Beach Bum Cafe on January 23, 2011. The Philadelphia native worked in software sales in San Francisco and moved to Hawaii to surf (and create jobs). McQuoid workshopped with locals and attended the American Barista & Coffee School in Portland to get up to speed. At Beach Bum, he features Hawaiian micro-lots in an effort to support local growers and to educate consumers Read more ...

Beach Bum Cafe: Keeping Coffee Local in Hawaii
My very first meeting on Honolulu was with reigning U.S. Barista Champion Pete Licata, which provided me with a pretty clear direction for the week’s caffeine consumption. His local recommendations initially led downtown to Downtown Coffee and an even more focused concept only two blocks away, Beach Bum Cafe. The “microbrew coffee house” with 100% Hawaiian coffee, a glass front and a pair of high-top tables resides at the base of downtown hotel/condo. Blink and you’ll miss it. I did, but it was well worth doubling back the two blocks. Read more ...

Hawaiian Micro Brew Coffee Spot - Beach Bum Cafe
I haven't blogged about Beach Bum Cafe in several months. I know I've tweeted and facebooked photos many times since my 1st blog about them back in February 2011, but those are a little difficult to search or compile so I thought I'd write another blog to help and do just that.
If you are a true coffee lover, you must have Hawaiian coffee at Beach Bum Cafe if you are in Oahu. I will admit that their location, in the middle of Hawaii's business district, is inconvenient even for most of us that live here, but that doesn't keep me away. If you need parking, I suggest parking at the Iolani Palace lot and paying the meter for a couple of hours of parking. I believe that parking there is the most affordable and it is only a couple of blocks (5-10 minutes walk) away. In fact, if you are a tourist, I suggest planning to go on the Iolani Palace tour and walking over for coffee after purchasing your ticket for the tour that begins later in the day. Don't forget to feed the meter if it's running out of time. The maximum you can pay at once is 4 hours. Read more ...

10 Foods We Love: A short list of gastronomic must-haves
9. Beach Bum Cafe embodies the best of Hawaii coffees
Let me count the ways I love the Beach Bum Cafe: I love it for its sole focus on Hawaii coffees. I love it because owner Dennis McQuoid can tell you all kinds of stuff about the coffee you select, from the farm where it’s grown to the qualities of the bean. (Plus, he’s such a friendly man, every visit is fun.) I love that the shop offers five brewing methods and that McQuoid is happy to explain the virtues of each. . Read more ...

Serious Coffee Shops in Hawaii
Honolulu may never have the same café culture as coffee cities such as Seattle, Portland and San Francisco, but we have the advantage of living in the only state that grows coffee.
Dennis McQuoid, owner of Beach Bum Café, honors our local coffee farmers by serving only 100 percent Hawaiian coffee. This is the place to taste the terroir of Hawaii’s various coffee-growing regions, including the North Shore of Oahu, Kualapuu, Molokai, and Kula, Maui. . Read more ...

Hawaii's no different from any other place in the country when it comes to coffee lovers: Step into any Starbucks and you'll see — we've got lots of 'em. And yet, we're not like everywhere else because we're the only state in the nation that grows coffee.
Viewed from that perspective, those long lines at chain coffee bars with their non-Hawaii coffees seem nonsensical. Shouldn't Hawaii people be drinking Hawaii coffee?
Thankfully, a host of venues in Hawaii do offer locally grown coffees.
But there's a new shop, just 4 months old, that is taking Hawaii coffee to a whole new level on Oahu.
Beach Bum Café, run by owner Dennis McQuoid out of a storefront in the Executive Centre on Bishop Street, is cutting-edge in what it offers: a selection of 100 percent Hawaii coffees and a choice of five brewing methods. Read more ...

More of a coffee tasting room than a cafe, Beach Bum Cafe is for coffee enthusiasts who view a cup of coffee as more than a caffeine jolt, who are interested in the terroir of coffees from each island, and who geek out over coffee gadgetry.
Each coffee is brewed one cup at a time–some of the options for making your perfect cup are french press, vacuum siphon pot and Chemex. The coffee beans tend to be rare and unique–small batches procured from lesser-known coffee growers. Go to page ...

HAWAI‘I’S PETE LICATA, THE 2011 US BARISTA CHAMPION!
It isn’t everyday that you get to tell the world that your friend and colleague is a champion. Today is one of those days. If you haven’t already heard, the venerable Pete Licata, Director of Coffee Quality at Honolulu Coffee Company, is the 2011 United States Barista Champion! While I’m tempted to tell you about this man, full of talent, integrity, and passion, I won’t; I know Barista Magazine will offer that in an upcoming issue. Instead, I’m going to tell you about the remarkable process Pete went through to create his coffee and what this new title might mean. If you want to see his permormance, you can watch it here.
Living in Hawai‘i, Pete had an extraordinary opportunity and the wherewithal to recognize it. He did something no competitor anywhere in the world has ever done. He produced his coffee from seed to cup. Literally. Pete trekked to the Big Island many times to harvest coffee (with some help from friends) from Rusty’s Hawaiian Coffee (Ka‘u) and Kona Coffee and Tea’s Waiono Meadows (Kona). Then, with the assistance of Miguel Meza (Isla Coffee), he processed the coffees. Once the coffees had rested long enough, he milled them and brought them to O‘ahu. Once in Honolulu, he roasted the coffee at Downtown Coffee (thanks Fred Hokada) and practiced his performance at Beach Bum Café (cheers Dennis McQuoid). Of course, I’d be remiss to not mention Honolulu Coffee Company and owner Ed Schultz for the support they gave Pete. Read more ...
Hawaii Business
May, 2011 by Dennis Hollier
There are a lot of reasons we visit our local coffeehouse: client meetings, free Wi-Fi or just the routine caffeine fix. For these purposes, your franchise coffee shop, with its roaring espresso machine and big Bunn brewers, works just fine.
But when it’s really about the coffee, you might want to visit Dennis McQuoid’s new Beach Bum Café in downtown Honolulu. This spartan little shop specializes in boutique Hawaii-grown beans, but the main draw is the variety of elaborate glass and steel contraptions used to brew individual cups of coffee. The shop is outfitted like a chemistry lab: shiny stainless-steel French presses, with their fearsome plungers; Chemex pots, with their stacked, inverted pyramids; the conjoined globes of a sock pot; and siphon pots that would look at home on a Bunsen burner. Playing with your coffee - Light Up Your Coffee for a Tasty Brew
BEACH BUM CAFE / There’s a new game in town for coffee aficionados–a rather elegant contraption that cycles hot water up and into a filter system. This “coffee toy” was first constructed in the 1830s and by the 1840s US patents were registered. Blue Bottle Coffee in San Francisco has reintroduced this siphon vacuum system on the West Coast, but locally you can try it out at Beach Bum Cafe. Read more ...

Authentic Coffee Haus Opens in HNL
For a town the size of Honolulu, let’s agree that we have an acceptable number of coffee shops. Yet, when we factor in that Hawaii is the only state in the nation that produces coffee, it’s safe to say that there’s no harm in lauding another into the mix. Especially when its owner aims to provide patrons with the best possible cup o’ joe, procured using a variety of methods, yet each utilizing 100 percent Hawaii-grown coffee.
Beach Bum Café (don’t let the name fool you; these guys mean business), which opens this week on Bishop street in downtown Honolulu, is the brain child of Dennis McQuoid. Taking note of the lack of consistent home-brewed coffee in Hawaii’s bustling city center, McQuiod tapped “Doctor Coffee” Shawn Steiman to consult on this no frills “microbrew coffee house” that will strictly serve made-to-order coffee.
